Largest Undergraduate Business School Competition in Central Canada

JDC Central

What is JDC Central?

JDC Central (JDCC) is the largest undergraduate business school competition in Central Canada, which brings over 600 student delegates together from Ontario, Québec and the Maritimes. Lasting three days each Winter, JDCC is a multi-facet competition, including academic cases for 8 business disciplines, parliamentary style debates, sports tournaments, social competitions, and charity contributions.

As of 2023, this competition is a new addition to TCCT. We are excited to see this delegation take Central Canada by storm after a historic comeback that earned Telfer Half-Delegation of the Year at JDC Central in January 2023.

Academic Cases

Accounting

The Accounting case encompasses all areas related to accounting within a business. From technical accounting and performance measurement to financial consulting, corporate turnaround, auditing, and the analysis of cash flows or projects, this case puts into perspective the knowledge of students pursuing the CPA path. It calls upon participants' judgment, values, and core competencies to contextualize issues typically studied in theory.

Finance

The Finance case requires versatile knowledge in the field of finance to solve a case that may focus on market finance, corporate finance, or personal finance. Partner companies will primarily come from the banking, insurance, financial planning, and real estate sectors.

Digital Strategy

Collecting, storing and retaining information are the pillars of the strategy anddecision-making process. The digital strategy case will support the technologicalstrategy desired by the entity in question. Students will be confronted with, amongother things, the reengineering of business processes, the implementation of an ERP(Enterprise Resource Planning), the implementation of a CRM (Customer RelationshipManagement) or the implementation of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chips.

International Business

The International Business Case fits perfectly in the era of globalization, covering a wide range of topics related to various fields of business administration. It addresses international expansion, whether the company in question is established only locally or already active in other markets abroad. This case requires extensive expertise to target a market, select the best strategies and distribution channels, manage the supply chain and various partners effectively, while considering the product life cycle, cultural differences, and territorial and legal barriers.

Business Strategy

This case consists of the analysis of a company in all its facets. Whether the company is growing or struggling, students must analyze each department of the entity in order to advise the most effective and realistic solution. This case calls for a variety of knowledge and more on the creativity and analysis of each participant. It is as much about looking at the issue at hand as it is about the manager's ability to manage his or her company well. Students may be called upon to think outside the box and to argue their solution in order to adequately justify their decision making. Knowledge in accounting, finance, logistics, human resources and marketing are used in this study, while being framed by ethics and national and international issues

Human Ressources

The Human Resources Management Case deals with all aspects of management related to training, development, and employee engagement. It addresses resistance to change following the implementation of a new system, certain deficiencies in organizational culture, departmental restructuring, the establishment of an organizational chart, as well as the attraction and retention of personnel. Students will need to develop their solutions while ensuring effective communication between franchises, unions, employers, and employees.

Entrepreneurship

Inspired by the worldwide hit American series Dragons' Den, the entrepreneurial innovation case deals with creativity and novelty. The issues of entrepreneurship frequently revolve around financing and value generation. In the context of scarce resources, entrepreneurs must constantly think about maximization. While venture capital and several government agencies and organizations are sources of funding, start-ups must first demonstrate the viability of their project. Students will have to develop a solid business model, demonstrate originality, and use strategy to convince potential investors to invest in their project.

Marketing

The Marketing case explores the key drivers of a successful marketing strategy. It covers essential elements such as market research, segmentation, strategic targeting, and the development of the marketing mix. The case will address growth-related challenges, whether through market penetration, new product development, expansion into new markets, or diversification. It may also involve the launch of a product, with a focus on communication strategy and market positioning, both domestically and internationally. All possibilities are open to stimulate critical thinking and sharpen the strategic mindset of tomorrow’s marketers.

Debate

In an effort to reflect the reality of debates in the House of Commons, this event is modeled on the structure of the Canadian Parliament. First, a university is randomly elected to take the role of the government introducing a bill. A competing university is randomly elected to take the role of the opposition and present arguments against the government and its bill. During this event, current bills will be put forward to allow participants to develop their arguments in depth based on their knowledge and opinions on the subject. During the competition, some universities will have the chance to proceed to the next rounds based on the score given by the panel of judges on the argument presented.
