What is Omnium Financier?

Omnium Financier is the largest academic competition in finance and accountancy of the East of Canada. Bringing together more than 350 students from 10 RÉFAEC universities, the competition aims to promote careers in finance and accounting in addition to providing a place for students to meet and discuss with key players in the industry.

Academic Cases

Personal Financial Planning

Financial planning consists of combining tax optimization, estate planning, investment vehicles, life insurance, risk management, and personal wealth management. This case requires a good understanding of several tax and legal concepts related to family wealth, investment management, liquidity management, and retirement planning. Corporate Finance

Corporate Finance

Corporate finance encompasses all decisions of the company, including long term decisions (investment and financing), as well as short-term decisions. Corporate finance deals with major financial decisions related to working capital, capital structure, debt composition, choice of investment projects, and above all, the fair market value of the company.

Financial Market

Management accounting aims to inform managers in the day-to-day management of their business. This discipline focuses on financial forecasting, planning, performance measurement, and cost management. This case encompasses strategic planning, performance measurement, selling price setting, internal controls, cash flow analysis, project analysis, and business turnaround.

Tax

Taxation encompasses all legislation and regulations in force regarding taxation, as well as measures and practices related to tax administration and tax collection. The case covers concepts of corporate tax restructuring, financial planning, tax planning, as well as tax consequences related to various events such as death, asset turnover, crystallization, etc.

Financial Accounting

Financial accounting is primarily used to provide standardized financial information under IFRS or ASPE standards to external users of financial statements. The case encompasses concepts of corporate governance, auditing, evaluation of internal controls, conceptual framework of accounting, audit planning, and special audit reports.

ESG Accounting

ESG accounting accounts for environmental and social capital in order to drive sound financial decision-making and reporting. This discipline focuses on assessing business impacts through financial and non-financial analysis, project evaluation, responsible investing, risk analysis and accounting for ESG related factors (i.e. GHG emissions).

Stock Market Simulation

The Stock Market Simulation invites participants to recreate the long-known frenzy of Wall Street trading floors in just a few hours. Participants will also be required to present a "Stock Pitch" on a specific stock. They will need to give their opinion on a company designated by the partnering firm and recommend whether to buy, sell, or hold the stock.

CFA Ethics Challenge

The CFA Ethics Challenge presents ethical dilemmas that students may potentially face as future investment management practitioners. Participants will need to identify violations of the CFA Institute's Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct. The winning team will have the opportunity to represent Quebec at the national final.

Financial Quiz

The financial quiz challenges teams with rounds of questions akin to a quiz show. Teams must memorize various financial information, including stock prices, stock symbols, mergers and acquisitions from the year, CEOs of publicly traded companies, their headquarters, market capitalization, and more.

Entrepreneurial Finance

This case aims to recreate the role of investment managers in a venture capital firm. Students will analyze three companies and decide in which one they want to invest, specifying the price and percentage of equity. Using various types of analysis and leveraging quantitative and qualitative data alongside industry insights, they must justify their investment rationale.

Surprise Case

This creative case allows any company to present the mandate of its choice. Students from various fields of business administration will attempt to combine their skills and knowledge to respond to the proposed mandate within 21 days. This case can cover diverse topics such as entrepreneurship, social economy, sustainable development, strategic recruitment, international trade, experiential marketing, corporate strategy, and more.
