Working Towards a Zero Waste uOttawa

As part of SDG Month at the University of Ottawa, our Happening Marketing delegation took part in an immersive campaign aligned with Équiterre's mission and values. In support of their responsible consumption and production pillar, our campus community came together to explore the topic of zero waste.

Highlighting our Awareness Event

Our event took place on March 18, 2026 in Tabaret Hall, and kicked off with an overview of our contribution partner, Équiterre. This year's Happening Marketing Coordinator Rose Michon shared, "We are very proud to collaborate with an organization who respects our values, Équiterre. It is an important pillar: the idea to give back, get involved, and have an impact beyond the competition".

The Impact Beyond the Competition

Students reflected on a motivating keynote speech from City of Ottawa Program Manager, Angela Plant. Angela is the Project Manager of the City of Ottawa's Multi-residential Waste Diversion Strategy and shared insights on what recycling and waste management looks like in our city. She explored the role the federal and municipal government plays in waste management, as well as recent updates to the Green Bin Program.

Participants also received valuable resources including a guide to zero waste at uOttawa and information on how to support Équiterre. Access the zero waste handbook here and begin your journey of responsible consumption and production!

A Gamified Learning Experience

Our event concluded with an interactive Family Feud inspired game where teams worked together to answer trivia about consumption and production. Each team represented a SDG and reflected on the meaning and purpose of their goals. The winning team, SDG 15 received a cash prize and placed a matching donation to Équiterre in their names. Hear from one of the winning members below,

"The Sustainability Showdown game allowed me to learn about sustainability challenges, connect with community partners and give back to an organization that reflects my values" - Teya Dhingra, 2026

Overall, SDG Month brings awareness to values that we encourage you to carry forward every day. Together, small actions can make big change. How we consume matters. Let's come together for a #zerowaste uOttawa. 💚
