Celebrating Women in Tech: National Ladies Learning Code Day
National Ladies Learning Code Day in Canada takes place on November 6th and aims to encourage and equip women and other minority groups with coding and technology skills in a supportive environment. The program was started by Canada Learning Code and aims to provide access to the information and skills required to thrive in a digital world.
Whether you’re completely new to coding or looking to expand your existing skills, there are plenty of resources to get started. To help students navigate the world of coding, this post will offer advice and guidance on how to get started and how to leverage coding skills in the business world. Whether your interest lies in data analysis, app development, or automation, these tips will help you take your first step.
What is Coding?
Coding, also known as computer programming, involves writing specific instructions to communicate to (a computer) what you want it to do. There are numerous of coding languages, including Python, JavaScript, C++, and HTML, among others.

University Courses and Resources
- ADM 3303 - Practical Coding for Business: In this course, you will learn basic programming concepts in Python, such as variables, lists, classes, and loops, and practice writing computer programs. Learn how to make programs interactive, analyze data and generate interactive visualizations, test code before deploying it, and deal with errors in code. (Prerequisite ADM 1370). Also offered in French under the course code ADM 3703 Codage pratique pour les entreprises.
- uOttawa's library offers multiple workshops throughout the year, which sometimes include coding. The Library's workshops page can help you stay tuned on upcoming events.

- Codecademy is an online interactive platform with both free and paid memberships. Programming languages include but not limited to Python, Java, JavaScript (jQuery, AngularJS, React.js), Ruby, SQL, C++, and Sass.
- SheCodes offers a Free Coding Class for Women which helps get comfortable with the basics and explore new career opportunities.
- FreeCodeCamp is a public charity that helps you learn to code by building dozens of projects, step-by-step, right in your browser, code editor, or mobile app. The courses, projects, and even certifications are 100% free.
